Other sources for Aere

[edit]

Hi again. Could I please ask for you to archive more sources for Aere? Didn't you know that Aere re-developed and JTWC re-issued advisories? I need them please to finish off its section. Thank you so much! Typhoon2013 (talk) 10:52, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

01F track

[edit]

I just noticed this and I figured I'd let you know. I'm pretty sure you have the track for 01F on the wrong side of the dateline, since it's located near 164W not 164E. atomic7732 07:04, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

2016-17 Aus season

[edit]

Hi. I got three things requested... 1) Just in case, Keith, is it alright if you could archive some sources for a tropical system that had recently developed (more info in article itself/formed Nov 19)? 2) Remember the TL during mid-October? If possible, could you finish adding/archiving sources until the 17th/18th, as the system fully dissipated or last mentioned by TCWC Perth were during the 17th - 18th. And 3) if you have time, should a track map for the 2016-17 Aus season be started? Especially how we have 3/4 TL systems so far. Thank you so much. Typhoon2013 (talk) 05:01, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Omg, thanks for the hard work. Also I just wanted to say, because I don't want to do too many requests to you because I feel like I'm too bossy, maybe you should help and if there are any bulletins from all of the 3 TCWCs (Perth, Brisbane, Darwin) that states a "Tropical Low" ("Lows" or "weak Lows" don't count) you should add in the sources please because it is easier. Again, thank you so much! :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 06:36, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Keep up the great work, Keith and it really does help a lot, especially how the problem in this basin since the start are "missing designated TLs". Now, it seems like we are filling in the "missing" TLs and it's in order. So perhaps in the next time you update the track map, to include those TLs, and look at the season timeline bar to see which one is which. Thank you so much and I hope by the end of the season we don't have any missing systems. :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 09:29, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, Keith. Could you please rename the image "Alfred Geostationary VIS-IR 2017.png" to "03S Geo..."? The BoM did not name the system even it had winds of over 35 kn. Thanks so much. Typhoon2013 (talk) 20:32, 28 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your website and sources

[edit]

Hi and I love that you have your website where you archive TC sources/warnings. Though do you have like any previous ones where I could look at? Because the sources older than like 5 days are deleted. Typhoon2013 (talk) 08:51, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If the warnings off Keiths website are deleted, then the relevant ones would be archived on the talk page.Jason Rees (talk) 09:16, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I do keep an archive but it's off-line. I can put selected ones back on-line if there is anything you particularly want to look at, and they aren't on the talk pages.--Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 16:08, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ok. I was just asking because there was a skip in designation from 27U to 29U (Frances), which of course there should be a TL between those systems. But if none mentions anything, it's alright because we had a lot of progress during the season as we have most TLs, whereas other seasons definitely have missing TLs, and thank you so much for it as we know what to do in future AusR seasons. :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 10:40, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Also could you please look back and find any TLs mentioned by BoM between 6 - 20 April? Just in case we find "28U". Thanks so much! Typhoon2013 (talk) 04:16, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Have a look yourself on http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/advisories/indexfull.htm - some of the Brisbane ones say "A number of transient lows may develop along a trough in the far northern Coral Sea over the coming days, however none are currently expected to develop into a tropical cyclone" but there's no mention any of them ever even became lows. --Keith Edkins ( Talk ) 07:35, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thanks for those sources Keith. But talking about this "missing" 28U, the only possible storm for this is Cyclone Cook as this site proves to us that a system can be designated by BoM even as it is to the east of the basin (where 13F, or soon to be Bune, was classified as 24U). Using your help, Keith, pretty much we have all "designated" systems by BoM and plus Cook is the only system mentioned between 27U and Frances. This is the only possible scenario and only thing I could say now is thank you so much for your help this season and I'm looking forward to find future TLs within the next season. Thank you so much you are so hard working! :) Typhoon2013 (talk) 09:15, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I work in the Population Estimates Unit at the Office for National Statistics. I have logged into to update the population pages for England and the rest of the United Kingdom. Release of mid-year estimates

[edit]

Hi Keith,

Thank you very much for your reply. Thank you also for updating the Wikipedia pages.

Just to confirm, will you be doing this updating each year? The latest mid-year population estimates are released in June of each year. So if you would like to continue that is when new data will be available.

Many thanks for your time.

With kind regards,

Hi Keith,

The ONS is publishing mid-2017 population estimates for the UK this coming Thursday 28 June. The data will be available to download on our website as usual. Please could you update the relevant Wikipedia information pages.

Any questions then please ask.

Many thanks,

Hi Keith, thanks for replying so quickly.

Do you publish a time series of population estimates on Wikipedia? If so we revised years 2012-2016 in a back series published last March and we have used new methods for this year's (mid-2017) population estimates. If you like I can supply you URLs of our methodology guide and statistical bulletin.

Many thanks for your time.

[edit]

Hi, Keith and it's been a while. So I have a huge problem. Can you please rename the current "Roke Geostationary VIS-IR 2017.png" back to "08W Geostationary VIS-IR 2017.png"? And in the same time could you please rename the "10W Geostationary VIS-IR 2017.png" image to "Roke Geostationary VIS-IR 2017.png?" Sorry about this, it's just that nobody really expected that 10W would be Roke and I really thought that 08W will be Roke. I hope you get what I mean but thanks so much. I have been quality assuring some of the population density data that you kindly updated by comparing the 2016 figures with our published spreadsheet and I have noticed some differences.

Please could you double check that the correct data have been entered for this page. Below is a link to our population estimates mid-2016 workbook and the table that you need is MYE5.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. Aloha, I really appreciated how many years you’ve posted bulletins for tropical cyclones. Deletion for some images reqeust

[edit]

Hello, Keith and of course I have to thank you each time for helping me and other users in Wikipedia! But I want to request a deletion of two images from a different project I'm involved in. I want these: (File:New Zealand Parliament Lab-NZF coalition seating plan, 2017.svg) and (New Zealand Parliament caretaker govt, 2017.svg) images deleted as they have a replica and someone is just in a mood and no need to worry about that. And to clear things up with this user, could you rename the file "New Zealand Parliament (current composition).svg" to "NZ Parliament seats, 2017.svg"? Thanks so much and I hope you understand. You really help a lot. Typhoon2013 (talk) 11:08, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Keith. I don't know if you received the message I pinged you, but could you please fix the sources you archived for Hilda and 07U (TL from Jan 1-2)? It's still not working. This is just to finish their storm summaries and to include 07U to the OS section. Thanks. Typhoon2013 (talk) 05:01, 13 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Areas for UK local authorities

[edit]

Hi Keith, A new user changed the area for Belfast from 35.32 to 44.5 square miles. In trying to check if this was right, I found List of districts in Northern Ireland by area which has the area as 133 km2 and led me on to Template:NI district population. This has the area of Belfast as 132.5 km2. Looking at the source, it has the area as 13,247.62 hectares (51.1493 sq mi). For now, I've put 51.15 square miles in the Belfast infobox but this all raises some questions. 132.5 is the correct rounding of 132.4762 and 133 is the correct rounding of 132.5 but 132 would be the correct rounding of the original number. Would it cause problems to have the full accuracy of the original number in the NI district population template so that the rounding for display is correct? And, is there any way to get the numbers from that template to ones like Template:Infobox UK place so that the data only have to be maintained in one place? Article of the month, by Jason Rees

History of tropical cyclone naming - The practice of using names to identify tropical cyclones goes back several centuries, with storms named after places, saints or things they hit before the formal start of naming in each basin. The credit for the first usage of personal names for weather systems is given to the Queensland Government Meteorologist Clement Wragge, who named tropical cyclones and anticyclones between 1887 and 1907. This system of naming fell into disuse for several years after Wragge retired, until it was revived in the latter part of World War II for the Western Pacific basin. Over the following decades, various naming schemes have been introduced for the world's oceans, including for parts of the Atlantic, Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The majority of these lists are compiled by the World Meteorological Organization's tropical cyclone committee for the region and include names from different cultures as well as languages. Over the years there has been controversy over the names used at various times, with names being dropped for religious and political reasons. For example, female names were exclusively used in the basins at various times between 1945 - 2000 and were the subject of several protests. The names of significant tropical cyclones in the North Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Australian region are retired from the naming lists and replaced with another name, at meetings of the various tropical cyclone committees.

Storm of the month and other tropical activity

Cyclone Fani was an extremely severe cyclonic storm that made landfall in Odisha, India on May 3. The storm achieved peak intensity as a near Category 5-equivalent cyclone with 3-minute sustained winds of 215 km/h (130 mph), 1-minute sustained winds of 250 km/h (155 mph), and a minimum central pressure of 937 hPa (mbar). Fani caused over $1.8 billion (2019 USD) in damage in India and Bangladesh and killed at least 89 people.

Since the last newsletter, twelve systems have formed.

  • Southwest Indian Ocean
In the Southwest Indian Ocean, Cyclone Kenneth made landfall in Mozambique approximately 1 month after Cyclone Idai, causing widespread flooding and destruction. Overall, Kenneth killed at least 52 people and caused more than $100 million in damage. Additionally, Tropical Cyclone Lorna formed over the eastern portion of the basin in late April and dissipated in early May without affecting land.
  • Australian Region
In the Australian Region, cyclones Lili and Ann formed in early May and both affected land. No deaths were reported, although Lili caused moderate damage in the Maluku Islands and East Timor.
  • South Pacific
In the South Pacific, a tropical depression formed in mid-may, but failed to intensify and dissipated a few days later.
  • South Atlantic
In the South Atlantic, Subtropical Storm Jaguar formed in late May and lasted for approximately two days before becoming extratropical.
  • Western Pacific
In the Western Pacific, three weak tropical depressions existed during the first half of May.
  • North Atlantic
In the North Atlantic, Subtropical Storm Andrea formed on the same day as Jaguar, but failed to intensify and dissipated on the next day.

  • The Eastern Pacific hurricane season began on May 15.
  • The Atlantic hurricane season will begin at 2:00 AM EDT on June 1.
  • The Central Pacific hurricane season will begin sometime after 12:00 AM HST on June 1.

More information can be found here. This list lists members who have joined/rejoined the WikiProject since the release of the last issue in April 2019. Sorted chronologically. Struckout users denote users who have left or have been banned.

To our new members: welcome to the project, and happy editing! Feel free to check the to-do list at the bottom right of the newsletter for things that you might want to work on. To our veteran members: thank you for your edits and your tireless contributions!

Editorial for welcoming new users, by Hurricanehink

Every year, editors new and old help maintain the new season of season articles. The older users are likely used to the standards of the project, such as how to Wikilink and reference properly. Newer users might make mistakes, and they might make them over and over again if they don't know better. If anyone (who happens to read this) comes across a new user, please don't bite, because with enough pushback, they'll decide that this group of editors is too mean, and unfun. This is all a volunteer project; no one can force anyone to do anything. We're all on here because of our love of knowledge and tropical cyclones. If you find someone new, consider using the official WPTC welcome template - Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Welcome.

I also encourage that if you know any tropical cyclone researchers, please speak up and try recruiting them to edit. Veteran editors can't keep editing forever. Life gets busy, and the real world beckons!

Member of the month (edition) – Yellow Evan

Yellow Evan has been involved with WPTC since 2008. Since the last newsletter, Yellow Evan has taken 5 typhoon articles to good article status as well as created 2 more. Overall, he has created and/or significantly contributed to more than 130 good articles. Your work in the Western Pacific Basin is invaluable... Thank you for your contributions!

From April 14–May 31, 2019, 1 featured article was promoted:

WikiProject Tropical Cyclones: News & Developments

  • An awards program for the project began on May 31. It involves 25 levels that may be gained by earning points for completing various actions such as getting good or featured articles. Additional awards will be added in the future.
  • As of this news letter, there are more articles ranked a good article or better (1317) than articles ranked B-class or worse (1272), for the first time in the project's history.
  • Every Atlantic hurricane season from 1945 to 2007 is rated at least a GA. That is an impressive feat, and an incredibly body of work among many editors.
  • Cyclone Raja became the 150th featured article in the project. Thanks to all of the editors and their tireless edits for writing 2.7% of all of Wikipedia's featured articles.
  • In the 24 hours after Hurricane Michael's TCR was released, the article on the hurricane was edited 82 times by 18 different users.
  • In March 2019, the most popular article in the project was Cyclone Idai, viewed 231,969 times during the month. The generic cyclone was 2nd most popular, with 131,080 views. In 3rd place was Hurricane Katrina with 112,283 views. Included in the top 20 were the 2018 and 19 Atlantic hurricane seasons, hurricanes Michael, Florence, Irma, Maria, and Harvey, and the 1896 Cedar Keys hurricane, which was TFA on March 20th.

Current assessment table

Assessments valid as of this printing. Depending on when you may be viewing this newsletter, the table may be outdated. See here for the latest, most up to date statistics.
As of this issue, there are 150 featured articles and 69 featured lists. There are 142 A-class articles, but that number is subject to change, depending if we mandate that all A-class articles have an A-class review first. There are 956 good articles, meaning it is possible we get to our 1000th GA by the end of the year. There are only 61 B-class articles, perhaps because because most articles of that quality already passed a GA review. There are 350 C-class articles, 720 start-class articles, and 141 stub-class articles, with 29 lists and 8 current articles. The number of lists may decrease further as the "Tropical cyclone X" articles continue to be reclassified as set index articles. These figures mean that nearly half of the project is rated a GA or better - including the lists/current/future articles, there are 1272 articles that are below GA status, versus 1317 that are GA or better.

Hi Keith,

Just to let you know that we, the ONS, are publishing the latest round of mid-year population estimates (mid-2018) on Wednesday 26th June.

Hi Keith Edkins. Perhaps you can help sort this out? -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:43, 17 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Simon Clarke (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

[edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Buriti River

[edit]

You have moved Buriti River to Buriti River (Mato Grosso) on the 19th of February 2020 with the intention of creating a disambig page at Buriti River. However that disambig page has not been created as of the 25th of May 2020. I have not done anything to the article in question but you need to get this done. Lieutenancy areas of Scotland

[edit]

Hi Kieth

I was looking at your map of the Scottish lieutenancy areas and I was wondering if you had one of them from 1974 when the local government act of 1973 came into affect. I want to make sure the lieutenancy areas today are the same created back in 1974 for a project I’m doing. Thank you!

GSS templates

[edit]

Hi Keith, I've recently made a suggestion for a New GSS template to merge the separate English, Welsh, Scottish and NI district templates.

I'd welcome your thoughts as the father of all of these templates. Do you think it would be beneficial?

I thought the advantages would be:

  • Ease of updating just one template rather than manipulating one source into multiple formats
  • The templates would be more likely to be updated and not diverge from one another (especially important since they now use the same citation)
  • Increased flexibility to include the UK nations and English regions from the ONS publication
  • With a standard format, it may encourage editors in different parts of the UK to contribute to more UK articles rather than operating in silos as presently
